Raise Your Hands And Worship The Lord?

A loyal blogger here that goes by the screen name (CM or Christian Mom) wrote this in a previous thread: "New thread idea's for you Jeff. The raising of the hands as soon as RW or someone says's Lets Have Church!"

Well I thought that was a good idea for a topic. I was a song leader while with the NTCC and of course between each song everyone was prompted to raise their hands and worship the Lord. Service would always start out that way as well. I must have made that statement about 5000 or 10,000 times, "Why don't we raise our hand and worship God."

As time went on, I realized that the practice of raising our hands and hollering out to the Lord had become nothing more than a heartless ritual. With their hands raised, half the people didn't say anything and the other half said the same things more often than not, over and over. We would sing a song and then after the song, "raise your hands and worship God", and then we would sing another song and immediately after "raise your hands and worship God", and then after the preaching, "raise your hands and worship God", or the preacher would get physically exhausted because of all his yelling during the service and to give himself a break he would say, "raise your hands and worship the Lord".

What was really happening there folks? Was that practice truly spiritual or had it become merely a learned ritual? I would say the latter for certain. I would periodically glance at the congregation between songs and some folks would be just looking at me with their hands raised, others would have their hands raised with a grimace on their face like they were getting ready to give birth, others would be screaming and hollering the same words over and over and yet others would be doing absolutely nothing but looking very uncomfortable. I went to visit Barnes church in Mississippi on a few occasions and his congregation had essentially discontinued the practice of raising their hands between songs or before service. I'm not a big fan of Barnes or any other NTCC pastor for that matter, but I can understand why Barnes would have decided not to make the raising of hands a ritual in his church.

The point I'm making here is that many of the NTCC ritualistic practices were fake as the day is long. For example, NTCC pastors would stand up behind the pulpit and get all excited while screaming, spitting, blowing and crying service after service. It was more often than not nothing but a show. Mayers would do it constantly and Oberhauser didn't even start doing it until right before we left the NTCC. It was obvious that it wasn't easy for Oberhauser to get all excited but he would try his best to make it happen. To the left is good image depicting NTCC preachers as they got themselves all worked up behind the pulpit while quite often verbally abusing and mistreating their congregations. I'm confident that you can figure out what species of animal that is because there is no better animal and probably no better picture that could effectively and accurately depict an abusive NTCC preacher.

The fact is, the NTCC was very often just as fake and overly charismatic as the Pentecostal church that the NTCC regularly spoke against. That was certainly an example of the pot calling the kettle black.

  2. thanks for starting this thread. I do see it as vain reptitions. Vain, especially for Tanya K. she LOVED when everyone raised there hands. She would twirl her Huge ugle rock around and around,or make sure her expensive watch was being shown. I don't care for GAUDY jewlery or fancy fake watches. But I do know when people are showing off. And Tanya K. was showing off,PRIDE!!!

As with ntcc raising of there hands. Just another control measure. Made people feel like they were Part of something. Same as Nazi's raised there hands to Hitler. It was all for show, that we follow you and we will do what you say. Anytime ntcc so called minister said raise your hands. If you did not raise them. get ready to get SLAMMED. Your not spiritual enough, your not getting INTO the service,on and on! If you did not clap for every song, seing as loud as you can, jump UP AND DOWN! You were not getting IN. And you were a Calf Looking at a new Gate(rw's famous words) If we had a serious look on our face's in concentration during service. Then we had to be not listening,or not getting IN the service!

Manuplating our emotions and controlling how we worshipped. Right down to our facial expressions. Better put that FAKE smile on folks. Or else you are unhappy, fighting with your spouse,or some other Lame stupid saying ntcc can come up with!

That is exactly right. Great observation CM. NTCC ministers would direct folks to raise their hands all the time knowing that many people felt uncomfortable with it so it often turned out to be a set up. Just like you said CM, as soon as the people didn't raise their hands they would immediately get blasted or openly ridiculed and as a result made to feel yet even more uncomfortable and out of place.

I hadn't even thought about that CM but that is exactly what would happen. The sad part about it, and like pdq said, all this raising hands to worship business turned out to be was a vain repetitious ritual. It's true and all someone would have to do is stand in front of the church and watch the congregation to know it. The faithfuls were the most ritualistic cause anyone could see that all they were doing was going through the motions. It's a fact!!! Take care CM and pdq and thanks for the input.

  5. Holy hands indeedy.

Another topic for you that I've been thinking about is about praying with the lights off!
I remember the first time I went to a prayer meeting and everybody was already praying but the lights were off.
Maybe a veteran of ntcc would tell us why that practice of praying with the lights off.
    Weird!

  7. I remember going to a prayer meeting with a bunch of service members from the Tillicum church. I think it was around 1986-87 it was about 10:00pm and we finished around 12: 00 midnight. I've been to a few prayer meetings and they were good but this night was strange it seemed to be a contest on who could pray the loudest and I felt that the spirit of the Lord was not in it at all. I believe to this day that sometimes these guys let pride and man pleasing rule their lives.

  11. I looked at the link Angie. Pretty much common stuff about the NTCC. Nothing that really caught my attention.

  12. Just a little side note. More of the same garbage from the NTCC. I can't get into specifics now but more info flowing in about the same NTCC garbage. "You'll be cursed by God if you leave the NTCC", "You need to attend more services", "You need to sacrifice more", "Tithe this and tithe than", "soul win, soul win, soul win".

Pastors treating their church members like privates in basic training, pastors disrespecting their wives and if you are not having church all week long you're wrong preacher. Ain't nothing changed in the NTCC other than they've gotten more liberal and hypocritical. I'll expound on what I'm talking about at a later date with approval from my trusted source.

    The NTCC is a joke.

  13. Jeff,

As I (and others) have said before...any changes are cosmetic damage control; always have been.

It is always the same cake with NTCC; they just change the color of the frosting from time to time.

  14. Sorry I am hyjacking this thread.

Something that popped into my thinking today. I was always baffled how these women with NO JOB outswide the home, are Dirt poor,no social groups to meet and do stuff with,do not volunteer anywhere, lived pretty much in the boonies in WA,No HOBBIES,NOTHING! What was it that they were doing that kept them SOO BUSY?? I knew ladies that left the home around 6 AM and was gone All day!! Doing what. The Library, grocery shopping, hitting the mall(but could not afford to buy cloths off the rack)KOOK store shopping( OH BOY!) and running people down in parking lots, bus stops, inside store's to give them a card and invite them to Church.

Folks that are still doing that. Do you know how ridiculous you look! What kind of image they are getting of your Church before they even go?

I wish women that are stuck in ntcc come on and explain what is it that ladies in ntcc do all day. That makes them SOOOO busy. Is it just a cover up. rw love's to say idle hands is the devil's playground. So to stay busy, you are "working for the Lord".

  16. POOR DONKEYS

Jeff wrote a statement in the Original Post describing his clip-art picture of a Donkey blowing and going from behind the pulpit:

" there is no better animal and probably no better picture that could effectively and accurately depict an abusive NTCC preacher."--Jeff

    oooooooooooo

    BitG says, Jeff, buddy, don't be so hard on those poor donkeys! After all, it was the dumb donkey who rebuked the disobedient prophet Balaam. (Numbers 22, verses 21-35)... :~}
